It's not easy to describe what belly dance is with words. The countries where this dance comes from are as diverse as the styles they have given us. Every great dance diva has added her own particular movements and expression to this fascinating and versatile form of expression. These differences in music, interpretation and emotion are what make belly dancing a dance for everybody. Every woman can find her own personal 'belly voice' within the great art of belly dance.
The lessons given by the ladies of the Belly Dance Foundation are inspiring and varied. Not only are the variations and styles of the different streams within belly dancing explored, the different music styles and rhythms are also explained. So not only are you having a good time dancing, you're getting to know the background of this great cultural phenomenon better while you're at it!
What to wear during the lessons? It's best to choose something comfortable and supple that gives you ample room to move. A long, supple pair of trousers or a wide skirt, a t-shirt or top made of soft material and a lovely coloured shawl (with or without coins!) for around your hips are best. Specialty shops sell special dancing slippers but these are not compulsory. Many ladies enjoy using their creative fantasy in designing beautiful garments to dance in. Belly dancing is an expression of one's self, a celebration of (your own) feminine beauty, so...what's holding you back?

information
Belly dancers are like an Arabian Nights’ fairytale, in real life! Their beautiful costumes are so glamorous and impressive, the little bells and coins jingle their festive ‘ching-ching’, and the gold and silver lining and shiny fabrics in all the colours of the rainbow are so dazzling, you have to pinch yourself to be sure you are not dreaming…
But but but........Oriental Dancing is not just about beautiful costumes, but also about having fun and getting a good work-out in the process! Belly dancing teaches you to control your body so you can move each body part isolated from the other. Not an easy thing to learn, but as with so many things: practice makes perfect! Your arms help along to make elegant ‘frames’ for the different poses and movements you make. Like graceful swans they will accompany your dance and make your movements even more beautiful.
These great workshops are available for young ladies who have belly danced before, as well as beginners. These workshops are very popular and are usually given at schools or in community centres.
The workshops are given by Linda Hermus, Boukje Thomasse, Yasmin Franka and Marianne Kooren, all dancers with the Bellydance Foundation with more than 12 years’ experience in performing and teaching. The Bellydance Foundation dancers regularly perform, lead workshops and organise presentations.
